Abuela by Arthur Dorros, illustrated by Elisa Kleven
A girl, Rosalba, and her abuela (grandmother) go on a bus ride to a park with tantos pajaros (many birds). So many, that Rosalba imagines taking flight herself, and calling to her grandmother to join her. “‘Ven, Abuela'”, she imagines saying. “‘Si, quiero volar'”, her grandmother replies, and leaps into the sky.
What this book lacks in terms of story arc, it makes up for in a general atmosphere of warmth and wonder. The illustrations are gorgeous. The text is mostly in English, with Spanish words and phrases used throughout, making it ideal for bilingual families and English-speaking families who aim to incorporate Spanish into their households.
