Down the Road by Alice Schertle, illustrated by E. B. Lewis
Hetty, a little black girl, lives in a little gray house with a dusty road in front of it. She has been down the dusty road with her parents, but never by herself. One afternoon, Hetty’s mother mentions that “Mr Birdie’s speckled hens are laying”. The family would love fresh eggs for the next day, but Hetty’s parents don’t have time to go.
Hetty offers to go, all by herself.
“‘Come straight home'” says her dad. “‘Don’t dillydally'”, says her mom.
Hetty makes it to the store, but will she manage to get the dozen eggs home intact?
