Inside Outside Upside Down by Stan and Jan Berenstain
In this simple story, which uses a limited vocabulary, mostly of words relating to spatial orientation, and only a few words per page, a bear goes in a box. He starts of inside a box, right side up, but later finds himself inside a box, upside down, outside and on a pick-up truck.
A great book for discussing spatial relations and exploring related vocabulary. As Stanford University’s DREME Family Math’s storybook guide suggests, talk with your child about what is happening in each picture and how you know (for example, how do you know the box is upside down? Which way is the arrow on the box pointing when it is right side up, versus upside down?).
What Maya loves: My 2 1/2 and 4 1/2 year olds loved this book! It’s a great one for storytimes with young children of different ages. We read it regularly.
Recommended age: 2-5
