The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig by Eugene Trivizas, illustrated by Helen Oxenbury
“Once upon a time there were three cuddly little wolves” whose mother sent them out into the world to build themselves a house. First, they built it with bricks, but the big bad pig came round and when he realized that he couldn’t blow the house down, he “went and fetched his sledgehammer and he knocked the house down”.
Things don’t get any easier for the poor little wolves, as they try, and try again, to build a house. No spoilers here, but there’s a plot twist at the end.
Uproariously good. Subversive.
On the “advanced” side for a 4 year old, so try back at 5+ if it doesn’t work first time around!
What Maya loves: My 4 1/2 year old was scandalized by this book – in the best way. He wasn’t sure whether to laugh or just sit there agape. A favorite!
Recommended age: 4-7
