Freight Train by Donald Crews
A train runs across a track. It is made up of many cars, each a different color. It is a freight train, each car begging to be pointed at and its color named (red, orange, yellow, purple, and so on).
The train starts to move. It blurs, then goes through tunnels and past cities… until it’s gone.
Bold illustrations and just a couple of words per page, around a topic of endless fascination for young children (trains!) make this book a great choice. There are board book and lift-the-flap versions.
Donald Crews is a black illustrator, and he won the Caldecott prize for this book in 1979.
