Patrick and the Not So Perfect Party by Anne Wynter, illustrated by Shirley Hottier
Patrick, the protagonist in this hilarious and vibrant picture book, is a bit of a perfectionist, particularly around his cooking. “He was precise when it came to dicing, slicing, filleting, sauteing, braising, and deglazing”.
So as you might imagine, his birthday party is meticulously planned. His brother Russ types up the invitations, which invites Patrick’s friends to “Come hungry and dress up as your favorite food”.
So why do the guests arrive dressed up as their favorite FOOT?! Oh no! Could Russ have made a typo in the invitation? (Hello print awareness.)
Surely Patrick will get it right next year… or will he?
Kirkus Reviews describes it as “hilarious” and “uproarious”. We wholeheartedly agree!
Both the author and illustrator are black women and the book features a black boy as the protagonist.
What Maya loves: My 4 year old son was immediately delighted by this book, especially the prospect of dressing up as stinky grandpa’s foot. And he loved the plays on words. An immediate favorite. Anne Wynter is one to follow!
