We’re Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen, illustrated by Helen Oxenbury
A family (four children and their father) play a game as they set out for a walk. Their mantra: “We’re going on a bear hunt. We’re going to catch a big one. What a beautiful day! We’re not scared.” As they walk they encounter various obstacles – long grass, a river, mud, and so forth – and find, each time, that they can’t go over it, and they can’t go under it.
“Oh no! We’ve got to go through it!”
The pages alternate between black and white drawings and watercolor illustrations, with the color illustrations showing what is happening in the children’s imaginations. The family ends up safe, at home, and in bed.
Another wonderful one for completion prompts (pausing to let you child finish the sentence or phrase) given the use of repetition.
