Best Books By Black Authors/Illustrators

Diversity on the page is important.

So, too, is diversity behind the page.

And diversity behind the page (in terms of the characteristics of the authors and illustrators that make the books we love) can be surprisingly difficult to find.

Here are wonderful books for babies and toddlers that are either written by a Black author, or illustrated by a Black illustrator, or both. They explore universal themes of connection, family and resilience. They are also beautifully illustrated.

We encourage you to invite these books into your home.

Your bookshelves – and your babies! – will be better for it.

As you navigate around our book lists, you may notice that we do things differently from many bookstagrammers.

We are led by a children’s librarian and every book that appears on our list is one we have read many, many times. We are confident of the strength and depth of feeling we hold for each and every one!

We individually review each book – so please do click on the book cover, or the “read more” arrow to read more about the book, and to see our age recommendations.
